This version of the State EMS Forms was posted on this site on 07/27/2007, and revised by the state on 5/5/2006. Last updated 1/13/2010. Colorado began submitting to NEMSIS in August 2009.
Date of First Data Submission: June 2009
Adherence to the National EMS Dataset: 100 % Variable Missing from the National EMS Dataset: Colorado has two on-line systems for entering EMS information: 1. The Agency Profile (to collect information about the
EMS agency) Both of these data systems were developed by staff at the state health department. The MATRIX is based entirely on NEMSIS and includes all the National Elements related to patient care information (as well as other NEMSIS variables). Details about MATRIX are available at http://www.cdphe.state.co.us/em/emtsdata/ The data dictionary for the MATRIX is the NEMSIS data dictionary. The MATRIX went live in 2006, with annual upgrades in 2007 and 2008. We anticipate submitting data to NEMSIS in May 2009. The Agency Profile system was created prior to the availability of NEMSIS. The Agency Profile was created originally as part of our on-line grants application process. The Agency Profile contains information that is equivalent to the demographic information in NEMSIS. Agencies are required to update their information in the Agency Profile at least once each year, typically between January and March. We have core questions that we ask each year as well as additional questions that are asked some years but not others. At this time, we capture all the NEMSIS demographic variables except the National Provider Identifier (D01_21). Total Service Size Area (D01_12) and Total Service Area Population (D01_13) were last captured in 2007. Also, for Level of Service (D01_07), our choices are slightly different from the choices in NEMSIS. Colorado now has 113 of 190 agencies reporting 82 of the 83 national elements. The department is collaborating with the Colorado Department of Transportation on developing a virtual data warehouse containing data related to traffic crashes. In conjunction with the Governor’s Office of Information Technology, data from several state agencies including the Department of Revenue, Department of Transportation, Colorado State Patrol, the Department of Public Health and Environment, the Department of Human Services and the Judicial branch will be integrated to create a comprehensive picture of traffic crashes in Colorado. The integrated system will be used to develop effective prevention and intervention strategies to reduce traffic crashes in Colorado and to improve the prehospital care of individuals injured in a motor vehicle crash.
