WASHINGTON EMS INFORMATION SYSTEM DUE IN JULY 2007

News Articles

Washington EMS Information System (WEMSIS) is a voluntary program to collect patient-care information for Washington State EMS and to eventually pass it along to a national EMS registry. The program is in beta testing now and will be ready for public release in July, 2007. The information gathered will be used at the national level to influence funding, improve training, and increase patient safety and positive patient outcomes. At the state level, the data will be used to support Medical Program Directors’ Quality Improvement programs, share information on traffic collisions and traffic fatalities, and support research into cardiac care, pediatric and geriatric populations, and perfecting effective procedures.

Electronic Fire Agencies
If your agency has purchased a records management system (RMS) from a national vendor, you can participate in WEMSIS as soon as your vendor completes the National EMS Information System (NEMSIS) interface.

Paper-based Agencies
Since WEMSIS is only for electronic data collection, Fire agencies that rely on paper run forms originally were not eligible to participate. Now, the system being tested will allow agencies to enter their run sheets in a web-based form that will support reporting to WEMSIS and NFIRS. This system can be run from any computer with web access, is customizable for smaller agencies, and is provided at no cost for the software or the maintenance.

While DOH is only asking for 103 data elements—the most basic patient-care information—you are free to customize your collection to include billing, special studies, or any of the over 400 NEMSIS data elements that might be useful to you. Whatever you decide, DOH is restricted from seeing anything but the 103 elements and only the person responsible for data linkage will see patient identifiers.
