Federal Organizations
  • Federal Highway Administration  (FHWA)
    FHWA is charged with the broad responsibility of ensuring that America’s roads and highways continue to be the safest and most technologically up-to-date.
     
  • National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB)
    An independent Federal agency charged by Congress with investigating  significant accidents in all modes of transportation -- railroad, highway, marine, air, and pipeline and issuing safety recommendations aimed at preventing future accidents.
     
  • Bureau of Indian Affairs  (BIA)
    The Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) responsibility is the administration and management of 55.7 million acres of land held in trust by the United States for American Indians, Indian tribes, and Alaska Natives.
     
  • Bureau of Transportation Statistics  (BTS)
    The Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) was born as a statistical agency in 1992 for data collection, analysis, and reporting and to ensure the most cost-effective use of transportation-monitoring resources. BTS brings a greater degree of coordination, comparability, and quality standards to transportation data, and to fill important gaps.
     
  • Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  (CDC)
    The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is recognized as the lead federal agency for protecting the health and safety of people - at home and abroad, providing credible information to enhance health decisions, and promoting health through strong partnerships.
     
  • Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration  (FMCSA)
    Our primary mission is to reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities involving large trucks and buses.
     
  • Federal Rail Administration - Office of Safety  (FRA)
    The purpose of FRA is to promulgate and enforce rail safety regulations, administer railroad assistance programs, and conduct research and development in support of improved railroad safety and national rail transportation policy.
     
  • The National Center for Statistics and Analysis  (NCSA)
    Provide the data and the analysis to allow complete understanding of the nature, causes and injury outcomes of crashes and the strategies and interventions that will reduce crashes and their consequences.
     
  • National Highway Traffic Safety Administration  (NHTSA)
    NHTSA is responsible for reducing deaths, injuries and economic losses resulting from motor vehicle crashes. This is accomplished by setting and enforcing safety performance standards for motor vehicles and motor vehicle equipment, and through grants to state and local governments to enable them to conduct effective local highway safety programs.
     
  • Safe Communities  (NHTSA)
    With thousands of people killed and millions more injured nationwide in traffic crashes every year, the Safe Communities approach has been proven to assist communities in reducing the all too frequent occurrence and unwarranted, wasteful costs of transportation related injuries.
     

 

National Traffic Safety Organizations & Research Centers

  • American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators  (AAMVA)
    The American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators strives to develop model programs in motor vehicle administration, police traffic services and highway safety. The association serves as an information clearinghouse for these same disciplines, and acts as the international spokesman for these interests.
     
  • American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials  (AASHTO)
    AASHTO represents all five transportation modes: air, highways, public transportation, rail and water. Its primary goal is to foster the development, operation and maintenance of an integrated national transportation system.
     
  • AASHTOWare
    AASHTOWare is a family of software products developed under the AASHTO Cooperative Computer Software Development activity. These products are maintained and enhanced by AASHTO and are available for license to AASHTO member departments, educational institutions, and other private and public agencies.
     
  • Association of Transportation Safety Information Professionals  (ATSIP)
    The purpose of ATSIP (previously known as the Traffic Records Committee) has remained as it was when the Committee was formed during the early 1970’s - To advise and assist the National Safety Council in the development and implementation of Council positions, programs, and activities related to the design, development, and use of traffic records systems which support the traffic accident reduction and prevention goals of the Division, the Council and the U.S.
     
  • Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA)
    The staff works to ensure that the states' perspective is represented to key officials, members of the media and others in the transportation safety community. By working with numerous partners, GHSA has been an effective voice for shaping national highway safety initiatives.
     
  • Operation Lifesaver 
    Strives to educate about the importance of safety at road-railroad crossings.
     
  • Advocates for Auto and Highway Safety 
    An alliance of consumer, health and safety groups and insurance companies and agents working together to make America's roads safer.
     
  • AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety
    A publicly-supported charitable educational and research organization dedicated to saving lives and reducing injuries on the roads.  
     
  • National Safety Council  (NSC)
    Provides safety and health solutions for reducing unintentional deaths and disabling injuries.
     
  • Network of Employers for Traffic Safety  (NETS)
    Dedicated exclusively to traffic safety in the workplace.

     
  • Canadian Association of Road Safety Professionals  (CARSP)
    Our organization represents a diverse group of professionals involved in the research, management, and delivery of road safety programs in Canada.
     
  • Traffic Injury Research Foundation (TIRF)
    Performs research into the causes of road crashes and develops and promotes effective prevention programs and policies.
     
  • Transportation Research Board  (TRB)
    The Transportation Research Board (TRB) is a division of the National Research Council, which serves as an independent adviser to the federal government and others on scientific and technical questions of national importance.
     
  • The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety
    The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is a nonprofit research and communications organization funded by auto insurers. For over 30 years the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has been a leader in finding out what works and doesn't work to prevent motor vehicle crashes in the first place and reduce injuries in the crashes that still occur.
     
  • The Partnership for Safe Driving
    Dedicated to eliminating all forms of distracted & dangerous driving by changing the driving culture in America.

Health

  • National Association of State EMS Directors  (NASEMSD)
    A voice for national EMS policy with comprehensive concern and commitment for the development of effective, integrated, community-based, universal and consistent EMS systems.
     
  • The Safe States Alliance
    The Safe States Alliance is an organization whose mission is to serve as the national voice in support of state and local injury and violence prevention professionals engaged in building a safer, healthier America.
     

  • National Association of State Alcohol and Drug Abuse Directors (NASADAD)
    A scientific, informational organization that fosters and support the development of effective alcohol and other drug abuse prevention and treatment programs throughout every State.
     
  • National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO)
    NACCHO provides education, information, research, and technical assistance to local health departments and facilitates partnerships among local, state, and federal agencies in order to promote and strengthen public health.
     
  • Association of State and Territorial Health Officials  (ASTHO)
    Dedicated to formulating and influencing sound public health policy, and to assuring excellence in state-based public health practice.
     
  • Indian Health Service  (IHS)
    Assures that comprehensive, culturally acceptable personal and public health services are available and accessible to American Indian and Alaska Native people.
     

Enforcement

Motorcycle Safety

  • National Association of State Motorcycle Safety Administrators (NASMSA)
    Coordinates the safety programs at the state level joined by other professional organizations, corporations, instructors, and individuals in intense efforts to make your motorcycle riding a safer and more enjoyable experience.
     
  • Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF)
    A national, not-for-profit organization sponsored by motorcycle manufacturers that offers rider classes and other services.
     

Impaired, Distracted & Drowsy Driving

  • Mothers Against Drunk Driving  (MADD) 
    Not just for mothers anymore, MADD is a group of thousands of members who embody victim support and assistance while changing promoting impaired driving legislation.
     
  • The International Council on Alcohol, Drugs and Traffic Safety (ICADTS)
    An independent nonprofit body whose only goal is to reduce mortality and morbidity brought about by misuse of alcohol and drugs by operators of vehicles in all modes of transportation.
     
  • Drowsy Driving 
    Striving to bring drowsy driving to national attention, as it can be as deadly as drunk driving.
     
  • Distracted Driving
    This is a USDOT website, intended to bring to the public's attention the dangers of using cell phones and electronic devices while driving.
     
  • Model Impaired Driving Records Information System (MIDRIS)
    MIDRIS is:

    1) A concept for providing a centralized point of access for impaired driving information from the time of a road-side stop through the adjudication and penalty/rehabilitation phase and into the driver history files.

    2) A starting point or think piece for states to use when planning an impaired driver tracking system.

    3)  A data dictionary of candidate data elements and data codes which might be found within such a system.

     

Driver Education

  • Share the Road Safely 
    FMCSA strives to improve the knowledge of all highway users to minimize the likelihood of a crash with a large truck, and reduce the consequences of those that do occur.
     
  • ThinkFirst Foundation
    ThinkFirst targets teenagers and children, teaching about about personal vulnerability and risk taking.
     
  • Teen Driving 
    Educational site for young drivers, including tips, stories, tips for buying a car, and even taking court ordered traffic classes online.
     
  • American Driver & Traffic Safety Education Association (ADSTEA)
    A professional association which represents traffic safety educators throughout the United States and abroad.
